Aloe Vera

When most people think of medicinal plants, one of the first that comes to mind is the aloe vera. This hardy succulent plant can survive outdoors in most frost-free climates but will also do equally well as a decorative houseplant. Growing aloe vera plants is very easy, some good quality cactus soil or potting soil and a well-drained pot in moderate light is all that is required. All that is required in the care of aloe vera plants is weekly, light watering and constant light and room temperatures.

The leaves of the plant are where most of the benefits of aloe vera are concentrated. The aloe vera plant has a very short stem or no stem at all, so the long, spike shaped leaves are full of the liquid that the plant produces, which is sold in many health food stores and contains the benefits of the aloe vera. For centuries the aloe vera juice has been squeezed from freshly cut leaves onto burns, skin lesions, rashes and wounds to promote healing, eliminate or reduce redness and swelling and to prevent scarring.

The aloe vera gel that is sold commercially in treating wounds contains the actual substance from the aloe vera leaf. Kroeger herb products, aloe vera gel, is one such commercially available treatment. The compound that is directly related to healing is the acemannan compound, which has been found effective in treating certain types of skin cancer in research test animals, although it is not yet approved for human use. This derivative of the aloe vera plant is in the injectable and highly concentrated form, much stronger than the natural juice provides.

There are also aloe vera products that are sold as cosmetics or aloe vera skin care items. These items contain extract of the plant that promotes smooth skin, heals skin blemishes and helps to naturally moisturize the skin. There are also products sold on the market as celulitis aloe vera cream. These creams are reported to help remove cellulite and fat cells from the skin and provide a smooth and soft texture to problem areas.

Finally, aloe vera is also sold in a liquid form. This flavored or natural drink is reported to be effective in curing digestive disorders as well as helping to prevent constipation, increasing digestion, and stimulating appetite, especially for individuals with chronic health problems and conditions.

There are many different uses for aloe vera and research continues into its benefits and uses in a variety of medicinal and cosmetic applications.
